The ACC's Schedule Shake-Up: Not Everyone Plays the Same Number of Games!
Get ready for a significant shift in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) football landscape! Starting in 2026 and continuing through 2032, the conference has finalized a plan that will see some of its member teams playing fewer league games than others. This decision comes as the ACC transitions to a nine-game conference schedule, a move that, with 17 teams, presents a mathematical puzzle.
But here's where it gets interesting... not all 17 teams will be playing the same number of conference games each year. The ACC has determined that a select group of teams will play eight league games in specific seasons, while the majority will adhere to the full nine-game schedule.
Who's playing fewer conference games and when?
For the 2026 season, five schools were already slated to play only eight league games: Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina. This was seen as a bridge to the new nine-game format.
Now, the ACC has finalized the breakdown for the subsequent years:
- Clemson will play eight league games in 2027 and 2028.
- Georgia Tech will play eight league games in 2029 and 2031.
- Syracuse will play eight league games in 2030.
- Florida State will play eight league games in 2032.
And this is the part most people miss... The decision on which teams play eight games was not arbitrary. Sources indicate that the conference members collaborated extensively to determine this schedule, with a key factor being the future non-conference contracted games already in place for each institution.
The 11 teams that will consistently play nine conference games each season from 2026-2032 are: Cal, Duke, Louisville, Miami, NC State, Pitt, SMU, Stanford, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.
A Point of Contention?
With not every team playing the same number of conference games, a new system for tiebreakers will be necessary to determine the top two seeds for the ACC Championship game. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips has indicated that the conference aims to have these new tiebreakers finalized by spring. This deviation from a uniform schedule might raise questions about fairness and competitive balance. Is it fair that some teams have a slightly easier path to the championship game due to fewer conference matchups?
Furthermore, the ACC has made it clear that non-conference games against other Power 4 opponents, including Notre Dame, will NOT count as league contests. Only games against fellow ACC members will contribute to conference standings.
A Robust Non-Conference Schedule
Despite the internal schedule variations, the ACC is also ensuring a challenging non-conference slate. Starting in 2026, every ACC member will be required to play at least 10 Power 4 conference opponents, regardless of whether they play eight or nine league games. In fact, Boston College, Georgia Tech, and Louisville will lead the charge by playing 11 Power 4 opponents in the 2026 season, a number matched only by Colorado (Big 12) and Purdue (Big Ten) across the entire landscape.
Overall, ACC teams are set to play 25 non-conference games against Power 4 opponents in 2026, the most of any conference. This includes nine games against the SEC, six against Notre Dame, and five each against the Big Ten and Big 12.
