This AI-manipulated picture, which portrays the alleged anti-ICE protester in tears, was disseminated around half an hour after the initial post made by US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
The original image, shared by Noem, depicted the woman with a neutral expression, but the subsequent version edited using artificial intelligence dramatically changed her appearance to show her crying. This controversial post has since attracted nearly five million views on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Hany Farid, a professor of computer science at the University of California and the founder of GetReal Security, expressed concern to BBC Verify, noting that this isn't the first instance of AI-altered material being circulated by the White House.
The woman in question, identified as Nekima Levy Armstrong, faces charges for allegedly orchestrating a protest that interrupted a church service in Minnesota, where a pastor serves as an official for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
When BBC Verify reached out for clarification regarding the image, the White House directed their inquiry to a post made by Kaelan Dorr, the deputy communications director. Dorr's statement read, "Enforcement of the law will continue. The memes will continue. Thank you for your attention to this matter."
Farid articulated that the use of AI-generated images by the White House raises significant ethical concerns, highlighting that it not only spreads misleading information, but also undermines public trust in the information shared by government entities.
