Just when the Denver Broncos were riding high after a massive playoff victory, disaster struck! Their star quarterback, Bo Nix, is OUT for the remainder of the playoffs with a broken right ankle. This is a crushing blow to Denver's Super Bowl aspirations, but can they overcome this sudden adversity?
Coach Sean Payton dropped this bombshell (https://x.com/ESPNNFL/status/2012711795111178714) following the Broncos' thrilling overtime win against the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round. Denver clinched the victory 33-30 (https://apnews.com/article/denver-broncos-buffalo-bills-score-playoffs-06db9c892a27dd854e25ece79d4671f1) against Josh Allen and his Bills, but this win came at a steep price: the loss of their starting quarterback. Stepping up to fill the void will be Jarrett Stidham, a backup with a 1-3 record as a starter across his six NFL seasons. Can Stidham really lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl? That's the question on every Broncos fan's mind right now.
According to Payton, the injury occurred late in overtime when Nix was tackled by safety Cole Bishop on a quarterback keeper that resulted in a two-yard loss. Nix was visibly limping afterwards (https://x.com/ESPNNFL/status/2012713764466896926), but the severity of the injury wasn't immediately apparent. He even managed to throw a deep pass to Marvin Mims Jr. on the very next play, drawing a crucial 30-yard pass interference penalty that positioned the Broncos perfectly for a game-winning field goal. Nix then knelt to set up Wil Lutz's 23-yard game-winning kick.
Payton revealed that Nix is scheduled to undergo surgery on Tuesday in Birmingham, Alabama.
"He’s such a strong, faith-based guy,” Payton commented. “He’s sitting in the hallway with his family and coming over and we’re all talking to him. He knows that God’s got a plan for him and he said he had (a broken ankle) in high school and then he said he had one at Auburn."
And then, Payton added with a touch of dark humor, "And I said I didn’t realize that. I said if I had known that I wouldn’t have drafted you,” Payton cracked. Was this just a joke, or is Payton subtly expressing regret about drafting Nix? Some might say it was insensitive, considering the circumstances.
What's even more surprising is that Nix himself didn't mention the injury during his postgame interview (https://x.com/NFLonCBS/status/2012696279042711683) with CBS. He actually sounded optimistic about the upcoming game, saying, “It’s great to have home-field advantage in a situation like this. It’s exciting. This is why you play the game, this is why you compete. You get to playoff football, and good things happen.”
The news broke after the locker room had emptied and reporters were waiting to interview Nix. Instead, Coach Payton returned to deliver the unfortunate update.
Nix, the Broncos' highly touted 12th overall pick from Oregon in the 2024 NFL draft, had an impressive start to his career, tying Russell Wilson’s NFL record with two dozen victories in his first two seasons. Saturday’s victory marked his first playoff win. While the Broncos suffered a defeat against Buffalo last year, Nix successfully guided Denver to the coveted AFC's top seed this season. This makes his absence even more painful for the team.
“He’s a tough cookie,” Payton emphasized. “And this team all year has lost key players and will rise up for the next challenge.” This speaks volumes about the team's resilience, but the loss of their starting quarterback is a monumental hurdle.
The big question now is: Can the Broncos overcome this devastating loss and still make a Super Bowl run? Or is Bo Nix's injury the end of their championship hopes? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
