California Democratic Leader Urges Weak Gubernatorial Hopefuls to Bow Out (2026)

California's Democratic Party is facing a critical moment as its leader, Rusty Hicks, takes a bold stance to ensure a Democratic victory in the upcoming gubernatorial race. With the fear of a Republican win looming, Hicks has urged weaker candidates within his party to step down, sparking a controversial debate.

In an open letter, Hicks emphasized the importance of each candidate honestly assessing their chances, stating, "It's time for tough decisions." He acknowledged that his suggestion may be seen as harsh, but with President Trump in the White House, the stakes are high.

"California's leadership on a global scale relies on a Democratic governor," Hicks wrote, highlighting the potential impact on the state's reputation and policies.

However, his call to action has not gone unopposed. Two candidates, Betty Yee and Tony Thurmond, defied Hicks' advice and officially filed their papers within hours of the letter's release. Thurmond, in particular, took to social media to express his disagreement, accusing the party of discrimination against candidates of color.

"Our political system is rigged, favoring the wealthy and connected," Thurmond stated. "The party is essentially telling people of color to step aside."

With nine top Democrats in the race, the concern is that their votes could be split, allowing the top two Republicans to advance to the general election. This scenario, despite Democrats outnumbering Republicans in the state, could have devastating consequences for Democratic voter turnout and down-ballot races.

Hicks warned, "The result could be a loss of congressional seats and a missed opportunity to retake the House, potentially cutting Trump's term short."

Recent polls show a tight race, with five candidates leading the pack, including Democrats Katie Porter, Eric Swalwell, and Tom Steyer, and Republicans Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco. The departure of Silicon Valley entrepreneur Jon Slavet from the race further consolidates GOP support.

Three influential Democratic leaders have voiced their support for Hicks' concerns. Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas echoed his sentiments, stating, "Candidates should know when to step aside." Lorena Gonzalez, head of the California Federation of Labor Unions, worries that low-polling Democratic candidates could tilt the election in favor of Republicans.

Jodi Hicks, CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, emphasized the risk of two Republicans advancing due to healthcare cuts under the Trump administration, especially impacting vulnerable communities.

The issue of minority candidates being asked to step down was raised by former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, who questioned the timing and implications.

"It's a delicate balance," Hicks acknowledged, praising the diverse field of candidates but recognizing the political realities.

Three prominent minority politicians, Kamala Harris, Alex Padilla, and Rob Bonta, considered running but ultimately decided against it, potentially impacting the diversity of the race.

"The risks are too great," said Katie Porter, expressing concern about the potential for two Republicans to make it to the top.

As the deadline to officially file approaches, the Democratic Party faces a crucial decision, one that could shape California's future and the balance of power in the state.
