Champions League Knockout Stage: Arsenal's Potential Opponents and Matchups (2026)

The Champions League: Unveiling Our Potential Opponents

A Perfect League Phase, Now What?

After an incredible run, becoming the first club to win all eight matches in the Champions League group stage, we're eager to see who we'll face in the knockout rounds. Our success has set the stage for an exciting journey ahead.

The Road to the Last 16

Last night, the competition took a dramatic turn as 24 teams advanced, while 12 were sadly eliminated. Out of those 24, 16 will battle it out in the play-off round, a round we thankfully skip due to our top-eight finish. And here's the cherry on top: our table-topping position grants us home-field advantage for the entire knockout stage, a significant boost!

Who's in the Last 16?

Besides us, seven other teams can relax during February with their spots in the last 16 secured. Bayern Munich finished second, with our 3-1 victory in November being their only slip-up. Liverpool and Tottenham secured third and fourth, respectively, while Chelsea and Manchester City also advanced, making it a strong showing for the Premier League.

The final spot went to Sporting Lisbon, who scored a last-gasp winner against Athletic Club to advance. These teams, along with ourselves, have earned a well-deserved break.

Potential Contenders

Real Madrid, who finished ninth, will join the play-off round, along with last season's finalists, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain. These teams, along with Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Atalanta, and Bayer Leverkusen, will be seeded in the play-off round draw and enjoy home advantage in the second leg.

The unseeded teams include Borussia Dortmund, Olympiacos, and a few surprise entries like Club Brugge, Galatasaray, and Monaco. Benfica also sealed their spot dramatically, thanks to a late header from their goalkeeper, Anatoliy Trubin, against Real Madrid.

Our Potential Opponents

Each team's league position will determine their play-off round opponents. As the teams who finished ninth and tenth, Real Madrid and Inter Milan will face off, playing against Bodo/Glimt and Benfica, respectively. This process will be repeated for the other seven ties.

But here's where it gets interesting: the top eight qualifiers, including us, are also placed in the bracket for the last 16 stage. As the table-toppers, we know we'll face one of the teams that finished between 15th and 18th spot. These clubs include Atalanta, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, and Olympiacos.

When Will We Know?

The draw for the play-off round will take place on Friday at 11 am UK time, narrowing down our potential opponents to just two. The first leg of the play-off round will be an intense affair, scheduled for February 17-18, followed by the second leg on February 24-25. After that, we'll have a clearer picture of our path.

There will be another draw on February 27 to map out the remaining fixtures for the knockout stages, giving us a clear route to the final. The last-16 stage begins in March, with the first leg away from home on March 10-11, and then we host our opponents at Emirates Stadium on March 17-18.

And this is the part most people miss: the potential for an epic comeback or a shocking upset! Who do you think we'll face, and what do you predict for our journey? Let's discuss in the comments and share our predictions and hopes for this exciting phase of the Champions League!
