Meet Clayton McCullough: The Man Behind the Miami Marlins' Success (2026)

Step into the world of baseball and meet the man who's making waves in Miami - Clayton McCullough, the new manager of the Miami Marlins. But here's where it gets controversial: why would a coach choose to take on a team that lost 100 games the previous season? And this is the part most people miss - it's not just about the wins and losses, it's about the journey and the impact you can have.

Clayton McCullough, a former first base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers, made a bold decision to join the Marlins. He saw an opportunity to work with like-minded people and take on a unique challenge. With a shared vision and a desire to build a winning culture, McCullough took a leap of faith.

And it paid off! In his first year, the Marlins exceeded expectations, dropping only 83 games and finishing third in their division. They even came close to securing a Wild Card spot, showing resilience and a never-give-up attitude. McCullough's impact was evident, as he instilled a fighting spirit in his team.

But how did he get here? Baseball has always been in McCullough's blood. Growing up in Greenville, North Carolina, he was surrounded by the sport. His father, a college baseball coach, later joined the Boston Red Sox as a scout. McCullough followed in his footsteps, playing baseball at Eastern Carolina University and being drafted by the Cleveland team. However, his playing career didn't quite take off, and he decided to pursue coaching instead.

"I realized my chances of playing in the majors were slim, so I wanted to give back and stay in the game," McCullough explains. His manager, Luis Rivera, saw his potential and guided him towards a coaching career. McCullough's journey took him to the Toronto Blue Jays organization and then to the Lansing Lugnuts, where he met his wife, Jill.

The couple, both family-oriented, chose Jupiter as their home base, close to Jill's parents. With their growing family, including three children, McCullough and Jill faced the challenges of a baseball lifestyle. But they found ways to stay connected, with Jill often bringing the kids to California during the summer.

"My wife is a superhero," McCullough says, acknowledging her support. Coaching in Miami has allowed them to spend more time together as a family, and Jill appreciates the shorter separations.

As McCullough looks ahead to the 2026 season, he's excited to continue building and improving. He sees the potential in his young squad and the opportunity to create something special.

"A blank canvas is beautiful," he says. "We can create our own path, and that's exciting."

So, what's next for the Miami Marlins and Clayton McCullough? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure - they're a team to watch, and they might just surprise everyone.
