Mets Owner Steve Cohen Reacts to Edwin Díaz's Move: 'Perplexing' Decision (2026)

The Perplexing Move: Edwin Díaz's Decision to Join the Dodgers

In the world of baseball, a recent move has left many, including Mets owner Steve Cohen, scratching their heads. Edwin Díaz's choice to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers has sparked curiosity and controversy.

But here's where it gets intriguing: Cohen, in an interview, expressed his surprise and confusion over Díaz's decision. He stated, "I did find that one perplexing. I'm not sure how Edwin arrived at that decision." With a respectable bid on the table, the Mets' offer seemed promising.

Díaz, however, opted for a three-year, $69 million deal with the Dodgers. New York's bid, though lower, hinted at the possibility of a higher offer. But Díaz's decision was swift, leaving the Mets without the chance to counter.

"When the heat was on, we had already signed Devin Williams. I felt it was a clever move, a hedge against an unfavorable outcome with Edwin," Cohen explained. The Mets believed the market for Williams was moving too fast to wait for Díaz.

And this is the part most people miss: the Mets swiftly moved on, signing Bo Bichette, who Cohen believes might be an even better fit for the team. "Once we got Bo, I felt he might be a better acquisition. I think things worked out for the best," Cohen added.

This offseason has been a transformative one for Cohen's Mets. With Díaz and Pete Alonso signing elsewhere and trading Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil, the team has undergone significant changes. Only one remaining player, David Peterson, was on the major-league team before Cohen's ownership began in 2020.

"I understand the fans' feelings when they lose players they've grown attached to. Change is hard, especially when it involves players I've developed close relationships with since day one of my ownership," Cohen empathized.

Despite the changes, Cohen remains optimistic. "I stayed patient and disciplined, and I truly like the team we've built. I'm excited about it," he concluded.
