Operation Sandstorm, a joint initiative between Queensland Police and Queensland Parks and Wildlife (QPWS), has cracked down on reckless behavior at Noosa North Shore, Teewah Beach, and Double Island Point. The three-day blitz, which took place from May 29th to 31st, resulted in a significant number of traffic infringements and a strong message to beachgoers and motorists alike.
The operation focused on dangerous activities, with 497 random breath tests conducted, leading to the detection of one drink driver and two drug drivers, all of whom received notices to appear in court. Additionally, 35 traffic infringement notices (TINs) were issued, and two penalty infringement notices were handed out under the QPWS Conservation Area Management Act.
One of the most notable incidents occurred on Saturday, May 30th, at approximately 10:30 am, when police observed two vehicles being dealt with by QPWS rangers for hooning at Noosa North Shore. The drivers received verbal warnings, indicating a zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior.
Another incident took place around 1 pm on the same day when officers patrolling Teewah Beach noticed two jet skis exceeding the 6-knot speed limit. Both male drivers were issued TINs, highlighting the importance of adhering to speed regulations, especially in areas with high foot traffic and potential hazards.
The final incident occurred on May 31st, at 11:25 am, when a grey Isuzu was allegedly detected traveling at 66 kilometers per hour in a 40-kilometer zone. This incident underscores the need for drivers to be cautious and aware of speed limits, particularly in areas where beachgoers and families are present.
Acting Inspector Jonathan McBride emphasized the importance of safety, stating, 'The safety of all beachgoers on Noosa North Shore, and in particular young children and families, is imperative.' He added, 'Our beaches are for everyone to enjoy, and Queensland Police undertake routine patrols of the area.'
