Rutgers University's athletics department is facing a financial crisis, with a staggering $78 million deficit recorded in the 2024-2025 fiscal year. This alarming situation has prompted the newly appointed Athletics Director, Keli Zinn, to take swift action and address the issue head-on.
Zinn, who assumed her role just a month after the fiscal year ended, was well aware of Rutgers' long-standing financial struggles. Upon taking charge, she delved into the department's finances and quickly realized the gravity of the situation.
"It's a no-brainer that we need to turn this around," Zinn remarked. "Our expenses are simply outpacing our revenue, and that's a recipe for disaster."
The latest financial report paints a bleak picture. Rutgers spent a record $193.8 million in 2024-2025, resulting in a $70 million deficit for the third time in five years. This deficit is largely attributed to increased spending on coaching salaries, support staff, and scholarship aid, among other expenses.
"We can't keep spending at this rate without addressing our revenue streams," Zinn emphasized. "It's time to get creative and explore new avenues to boost our income."
One of Zinn's key strategies has been to enhance Rutgers' Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities, aiming to attract and retain top athletes. However, this initiative comes with a significant cost, as the athletics department is now facing a $20.5 million NIL expenditure for the current fiscal year.
"We're in a tough spot right now," Zinn acknowledged. "Our expenses have skyrocketed, and we need to find ways to generate more revenue to balance the books."
Zinn believes that the upcoming years will be challenging, with spending expected to exceed $200 million in 2025-2026. She predicts that this year will be the worst in terms of financial performance but expresses hope for improvement in the following years.
"We're working on a long-term plan to turn this ship around," she said. "It won't be easy, but I'm confident we can make a positive impact and start reducing the deficit."
In an extensive interview, Zinn highlighted her concerns about key revenue areas, particularly football ticket sales, which remained flat between the 2023 and 2024 seasons. However, she noted that the recent season saw an increase of $1.3 million in single-ticket sales, which is a positive sign.
"We need to keep pushing and find innovative ways to engage our fans and boost attendance," Zinn added.
Another area of concern is the decline in royalties, licensing, advertisement, and sponsorship sales, which dropped by nearly $6 million. Zinn believes that with a strong brand and marketing strategy, they can turn this around and attract more corporate partnerships.
"We're already having productive conversations with potential partners about increasing our commercial presence on uniforms and other platforms," she revealed.
Additionally, Zinn plans to focus on boosting fundraising efforts and exploring ways to enhance the fan experience by adding club-level and premium seating options at SHI Stadium and Jersey Mike's Arena.
"It's a delicate balance between investing in infrastructure and managing expenses," she explained. "But with the right approach, we can create a sustainable model that benefits both our athletes and the university as a whole."
The road ahead is challenging, but Zinn remains optimistic and determined to lead Rutgers' athletics department towards a brighter financial future.
