The UK's Measles-Free Status Revoked: A Wake-Up Call for Vaccine Uptake
The UK's status as a measles-free country has been revoked by the World Health Organization (WHO) due to a concerning trend in recent years. The decision comes as a result of rising measles-related deaths and a decline in the number of children receiving the MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine. The WHO's European Regional Verification Commission for Measles and Rubella Elimination announced that the UK is no longer considered measles-free, joining a list of six European and Central Asian countries in this unfortunate category. Spain, Austria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan share the same fate.
The UK's measles elimination status was previously adjudged between 2021 and 2023, but recent data revealed a concerning trend. In 2024, there were 3,681 recorded cases of measles, a significant increase from previous years. Additionally, the number of outbreaks and deaths has risen, with 20 deaths attributed to measles between 2019 and 2025, mirroring the 19-year total from 1999 to 2018.
